Jean Payen

This is a type I Tarot de Marseilles deck dated to 1743. The Payen family began making cards in the 17th century. There are two existing examples of their cards, with the Dodal deck being a very close copy. Jean Payen was the uncle to Jean Pierre, though the deck with his name is dated later. The Dodal deck, which is almost identical to the other two, is thought to be a version made specifically for export.
